A Sense of Humus through All Seasons (Season by Season Sustainability) by John Wear In nature, there is a continual recycling of all kinds of organic materials. Leaves, grass, branches, bark, dead insects and animals decompose and slowly become topsoil and food for plants. Plant roots take nutrients from the decomposing materials. The decomposed materials become an "earthy smelling" compost. This compost becomes humus. The humus is the life source for the soil. NATURAL SOIL FERTILITY (Nutrient Values from Compost and Active Aerobic Compost Tea) Active, energetic, easy to work soil is high in humus content. Such soil contains much microbial and fungal life. It is very fertile. Humus researchers, Dr. S. A. Waksman and Dr. Stan E. Wedberg of the University of Connecticut, studied soil humus, soil microbes, and soil fungi. Wedberg stated, "The fertility of the soil is in direct proportion to the number and activity of soil microorganisms." It was also discovered that soil organic matter is necessary to attract and to maintain microorganism values in soil. Compost and Active Aerobic Compost Tea, a liquid organic energy activator, are two totally organic products which help us increase humus values in depleted soils. SOIL LIFE VALUES For soil to have beneficial life, (energy which makes soil fertile), the soil must have high humus content. The humus content and exudates of the microorganisms compose the plant-appropriate food matter which is released for plants to ingest by osmosis. This is the natural and appropriate design for energy transfer to plants. Organic matter is the safe and most effective source of long term and sustainable food supply for the "critters" which are designed to support growth of plants (important human and animal food supplies.) Some additional subjects for study: 1. Decomposition of crop residues. 2. Mineralization of soil organic matter. 3. Synthesis of soil organic matter. 4. Nitrification 5. Fixation of nitrogen. 6. Immobilization of mineral nutrients. 7. Formation of soil organic matter. Synthetic, chemical, man-made fertilizers are able to provide some stimulation to plants. It is possible to enhance or to speed the process of photosynthesis by timely applications of certain fertilizers to growing plants. Fact is, well balanced soil which contains adequate amounts of available organic matter, (stable humus), has values which ensure that the process of photosynthesis will happen. It is the microbial life that provides reliable energy to plant roots, giving strength to stems and health to developing leaves. When soil is well fed with 3% to 5%, or more, high quality organic matter, synthetic fertilizing is not required. |
